Hawaii is a great place to shoot photographs.  Hawaii is actually a great place for almost anything except skiing and hockey.  I shot a quick casual beach session while I was there and have these photos to share with you. Group shot at the 1st tee.  The group looking into the sun can be challenging since people squint and there can be a lot of shadows in the eyes.  In this case it worked great because everyone had sunglasses and the shoot was for fun anyways and was not formal.  The sun directly on the subjects allows for proper exposure of the bright sky in balance with the rest of the scene.  Hence the

I recently had the opportunity to take photos of the graduates from RDC's nursing class.  We began shooting a series of portraits of each girl in a portable studio set up I brought to RDC.  I used a 4 foot softbox with a strobe and experimented with a bit of cross lighting.  The Softbox sat camera left at about 45 degrees while the naked strobe sat high over their shoulders camera right.

Working with RDES I had the opportunity to get some cool photography during training.  We took to the streets of Red Deer and were given the opportunity to use real structures to practice forcible entry as well as  simulated firefighting evolutions and rescues.  Equipped with smoke machines and various tools, fellow firefighters laddered roofs and cut holes for ventilation.  Attack teams

I took this panorama earlier this summer while out scrambling Heart Mountain.  I was not quite at the summit yet when I looked north and saw the vast landscape and Hwy 1 winding its way through the valley.  I ended up shooting 5 pictures in total to create this 1!  I did it all handheld and stitched them together in  PS post-production.  Camera right you can see Highway 1 towards Calgary heading

This summer I was down in Oregon, specifically in Salem, shooting a graduation.  Graduations in the US seem to be a 'big deal' compared to up here in Canada.  It's not that they are not as important or have any less significance, there just seems to be a lot more graduates and everything is on a larger scale.  Bigger venues, more people, big families!  It was a pleasure to have this experience

I took a few casual shots today for a local bodybuilder Jeff Morin.  He is competing twice today and met me in between shows for a quick photo session.  I set up using two light stands with hard flash (no umbrella) and set one flash to 1/4 power and the other one ranged from 1/4 all the way up to 1/1.  The flash camera left was the flash set to 1/4 power and was about Jeff's shoulder height and

Here are a few favorites of mine from the same project in color.  The seeder/trailer shot was taken from inside a tractor while actively seeding with the farmer.  This image was enhanced with a saturation boost and a lot of contrast / blacks.  The second picture was from the seed cleaning plant.  There were a lot of dark shadows inside this "industrialistic" (is that a word?) building.  I

On April 19th, a fellow photographer and friend of mine, Alex, hit the streets with our cameras and lighting gear in hopes to capture some 'off the cuff' RAW street portraiture.  We were armed with everything from cameras with multiple lenses, to light stands and umbrellas with wireless flash.  We were successful in the end after not knowing what to expect or how people would respond.  We even

I took this picture a few nights ago when the snow had finally cleared off our streets.  I was playing around with some lighting and caught my subject 'holding on' in the stone wall frame for his next picture.  Like most pictures, my favorites are the in-between moments that portray a  more candid style.  I like the fact you can't see his face and he becomes a shape along with his environment.

A little self portrait I am quite proud of.  It is rendered in the '300' (the movie) style.  I shot this with a steady hand at really low shutter speeds while holding my breath inside the Hudson Bay Co in Banff Ab.  You can see my wife Christal in the background shopping it up.  The slight camera tilt is on purpose and adds to the artistic effect.  The pattern of the ceiling and its lights really

Hey All!I was down in the mountains last week and my wife Christal and I visited the Banff Springs Hotel.  Inside they had an amazing fish tank.  While waiting for Christal to use the bathroom, armed with my camera, I took the opportunity to try and shoot some tropical fish.  I had never tried shooting fish in a tank before or ever tried shooting through glass.  The camera has no troubles with

This is my workspace at home... my office, where I edited, upload, download, delete, and develop a sore back from sitting in a chair for so long.  I snapped this shot with my new wide angle lens (10-22mm) on my 40D.  This sucker goes WIDE and has some obvious distortion in the edges.  It is a pretty fun lens to use but should be avoided with any close portraits because of its distortional

Geesh,I find myself doing a lot more things with photography than taking photo's lately.  Isn't photography about taking photo's?  I used to think so.  There is so much to do with post production in programs like Photoshop etc, that one could spend more time behind the computer rather than behind the lens.  I am trying to find the balance but have definitely weighed more towards the computer and

Working with Calgary musician Tyler W., I helped him to create some imagery for his studio.  He plays a variety of instruments but his passion lies with the sound created by "strings".  I took these photo's in a specific way that would tell the story of the instrument.  The Cello displaying is beautiful curves in such a perfect balanced form.  It's scroll a form on its own deserved its own
