B.C.'s Sunshine Coast

5D Mk II, full RAW, Rapid Fire shutter, AF servo, 195mm zoom L series lens, ISO 400, F 4.5, 1/6400 sec

Original photograph
I came across these two photos this evening and thought I would share them with you on my blog.  I was in the mood to post something other than portraits.

The first photo is a very cropped down picture from its original as you can see.  I used full RAW mode on my camera in anticipation of the major croppage I was going to have to perform.  Not bad considering how far away the bird was.  It was a good test of resolution on my 5d mk II's maiden voyage.

The second photo is a 1 second exposure of a waterfall on Goat Island on Powell lake.  I am not sure why I used ISO 200.  I must have forgot I could push the camera to a low ISO 50 and get an even longer exposure to soften the water.  Oh well.  For whatever reason, that was the exposure I took and it worked just fine.

Please let me know what you think or some of your experiences with similar photographs ;)

Performance Edge Olympic Lifting Clinic

This was the second time I have worked with Andre of Performance Edge Consulting.  Andre is a personal trainer and has been instructing Olympic lifting courses at PURE fitness in Red Deer.  This shoot brought me to the new PURE facility near downtown Red Deer.  It was a large spacious enviroment with an industrial feel that definitely said "crossfit".

Andre was looking to capture content for his website, multimedia advertising, and general archival purposes.....

Environmental Portraits Banff Alberta

Pattern shape and texture from the rock give this picture some impact

An environmental portrait is a picture composed of both your subjects and their surrounding environment.  More often than not, it is the environmental portrait that couples print large and put on the wall as a piece of art or keepsake.

I met Holly and Tyler in Banff and we  headed up the tram to the top of Sulphur Mountain.  It was windy, cold, and almost snowing so we didn't have a ton of time to enjoy ourselves as much as we had wished.  We were still able to get down to business and capture some breathtaking photographs despite the numb fingers!....

Sylvan Lake Wedding Photographs "teasers"

I recently photographed the Laiss McLeod wedding here in Sylvan Lake.  The bride and groom, along with their wedding parties, made the day a whole lot of fun!  We were threatened by rain all week but lucked out with a pretty decent day.  Anything but rain is always a good day for me ;)......

Sylvan Lake Fire May 18 2010 | Aftermath

On May 18th at about 1700 four houses burnt down and a number of other homes were damaged from the severe heat radiating from the blaze.  News reports state that nobody was physically injured however there are families suffering with the loss of everything they once owned.  Sylvan Lake RCMP victims services is accepting donations etc if you wish to support these families.  More information can be obtained from them.

I spoke with the photographer from the Red Deer advocate....

I have been lucky enough to make enough room for a small studio space in my basement here in SylvanLake.  It is large enough to shoot anything from headshots to small families.

some ol' travel shots

I was going through my library of photos today and came across a bunch that I haven't seen in a while.  It kinda felt like when I was a kid and used to pull out some of the old family albums and actually look at prints!

Hey Everyone!

The studio photographs of Payton Wallace are complete and ready for you to check out.  Poor Payton was not a big fan of the big flash!  A little upset throughout most of the shoot but we did our best, worked together and still were able to get a lot of great super cute photos....

Lessons learnt: low and mixed light

RDES PC ceremony "C" shift

Taking photos of this ceremony was a difficult task due to low and difficult mixture of light.  I was faced with high ceilings complete with fluorescent lights that casted a greenish hue.  I had small amounts of natural light coming in through small windows on the bay doors that flanked my subject areas.

RDES Memorial Service

It was an emotional day as I stood behind the lens to document Red Deer Emergency Services first "line of duty death" memorial service.  Held at the Westerner grounds in Red Deer, we were joined by many family, friends, and fellow brothers from various fire departments around the province.  An honor guard complete with pipes and drums led members in march into the Harvest center where the service was held.  Finally, outside we gathered once again.  This time for a final salute as we said farewell to our fallen brother.
